The Meaning of Christmas
I will not be joining millions of shoppers on Black Friday. Instead, I will be spend the day decorating a Christmas tree and creating a nativity scene for my 88 year old mother. She has told me that she will "be leaving this winter." I pray that she's wrong, but I know my mother as someone who does what she says.
When I and my brothers were children, she would set up a nativity and ask us to kiss the baby Jesus on Christmas eve. I obeyed to keep the peace but it felt insincere. Now that her energy for traditions and rituals is gone, I am grateful for my mother's efforts to teach us the meaning of Christmas. For her, it was not about gifts but about the celebrating the birth of Christ. Difficult for a child to understand but a great lesson to remember as an adult.
